Here in this wilderness,

I will reveal to all where the path lies.”

The Guide

James Harper’s journey with Japan and its arts spans 40 years of academic study, guiding and work in the media.

Graduating from London University in Japanese language and culture, it includes a career in producing documentaries on politics and art, and encompasses a decade of leading walks along the historic Nakasendo road.

This has generated a rare and closely-guarded contacts book. Made up of a wide network of friends and acquaintances across the creative industries and beyond, it opens the door to many hard to reach people and places.

After four decades of living in and visiting Japan, James continues to find the path less travelled and uncover special places, each time renewing his sense of wonder and excitement.

On a Kadensho art tour, old favourites and new discoveries are shared with fellow travellers. It is an immersive experience of being in Japan, looking at its art, and finding your own moments of joy and wonder.
